The Rum Baba Diary
Return from a brief hiatus for the Quality Wines newsletter, welcome back. Some changes here & abroad, That Was the Week That Was, Fear & Loathing in the USA. Here’s to the weekend, to eating, to drinking. A need for comfort, camaraderie, some excess.
Thinly sliced veal liver is pan fried, Venetian style. Sweet, well cooked onions are added, some parsley, some wine, that’s all! An intoxicating plate of brown, an intoxicating glass of Valpolicella. ‘Fegato alla Veneziana’, really quite memorable.
Egg yolk pappardelle comes with ragu bolognese, u-Mama. Available at lunch and dinner. At lunch at the rather silly price of £15 with a glass of wine, beer or soft drink.
A luncheon sandwich of salame rosa with chilli & rocket will come in a focaccia Genovese, available midday to 2:30pm. Again with with a drink for £15.
A steamed white fish, we’ve had some cracking pollack & hake this week, comes with purple sprouting broccoli & a punchy dressing of black olives & anchovies. Salinity, simplicity, sanity.
Lamb shoulders are slowly roasted & served with 2 merguez, aioli & a green salad. Waxy, fudgy potatoes that have done their time with the meat are the star, orange orbs of flavour & texture. One for the Tattie-Heads, Spud-men, Tuberthumping! A dish for for 2 to share, 1 to gorge.
And, rum babas are back! Cake & cream for those that want their dessert with a kick.
Just a note to remind that we have a few slots still available on our ‘Large Table’ through the Christmas period. Please head to the website to see menus for feasting & festivities. Any inquiries for whole or part restaurant hires, please email [email protected].
Remember, walk like an Egyptian, pan fry like a Venetian.
Bolognese, Genovese, Fraternotese.
